What does comprehensive travel insurance cover?
When planning an overseas holiday, there are often things you simply can’t predict. Fast Cover’s Comprehensive travel insurance policy is available to provide some cover under a range of benefits to help you deal with and take steps to be prepared for many unexpected and unforeseen circumstances during your overseas trip.
This is a summary only. Terms, conditions, exclusions and limits apply. Not all benefits apply to all policies. Read the PDS and TMD before buying.
Cancelled holidays can be both disappointing and expensive, especially if you have paid for flights, accommodation, or tours. If you become unexpectedly ill, injured, or experience another event under your policy that forces you to cancel your trip, Fast Cover’s Trip Cancellation Expenses benefit may reimburse the non-refundable costs you’ve already paid.*
Comprehensive travel insurance can be purchased up to 12 months before your departure date, allowing you to cover pre-paid trip costs even before you book your flights or accommodation. This flexibility may help reduce the impact of unexpected events that may affect your travel plans before you leave Australia.*
Travel delays are a common part of international travel and can occur for many unexpected reasons, and circumstances outside your control. If your pre-booked transport is cancelled or delayed due to an event covered by your Comprehensive policy, our Travel Delay Expenses benefit may reimburse you for reasonable additional meals and accommodation during the delay.*
Under the Comprehensive travel insurance policy, cover may be available for up to $200 per traveller (excluding dependants) listed on the Certificate of Insurance for the reasonable additional meals and accommodation expenses, for every 24-hour period you are delayed, provided the delay lasts at least six hours and meets the policy’s conditions.*
Sometimes, even after your trip begins, unexpected events can disrupt your plans. Unforeseen events like natural disaster and strikes can result in cancelled or diverted transport and cause significant disruption. Fast Cover’s Trip Disruption Expenses benefit may cover reasonable additional travel and accommodation expenses you incur while you’re still on your trip if the disruption occurs for reasons covered under your policy.*
Expenses must be unrecoverable from another source, and the event must be one that began after your Certificate of Insurance was issued. Full details, including conditions and exclusions, are outlined in the PDS.*
While it’s not something we would want to think about, serious accidents can happen. Fast Cover’s Comprehensive travel insurance includes Accidental Death and Permanent Disability benefits, which can provide a lump sum amount of money to you or your estate if a covered accident results in death or a permanent disability while overseas.*
This benefit may help ease the financial strain that serious incidents may cause, providing additional support to your loved ones or helping you adjust after a life changing event.*
Our Comprehensive travel insurance policies provide access to our Australian based Emergency Assistance hotline with 24/7support.*
Depending on your situation, Fast Cover’s Emergency Medical Assistance team may be able to assist you during unexpected medical emergencies overseas by:
Locating and arranging overseas medical treatment or hospital admission
Coordinating approved medical evacuation or repatriation
Providing guidance on accessing local medical support services*
An unexpected trip to the hospital overseas could be costly. If you break a bone in the US, or need surgery in Japan, Fast Cover may be able to help with overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses in some circumstances which are covered under your Comprehensive policy.*
Fast Cover’s Comprehensive travel insurance policies are available to provide protection against the financial burden of reasonable overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses from unexpected illness or injuries.*
If you become seriously sick or injured while overseas, having access to emergency medical care can make a huge difference. Fast Cover’s Comprehensive travel insurance may be able to help with the cost of getting you to the nearest hospital for emergency medical treatment or even flying you back to Australia, in circumstances covered under your policy.*
Our Comprehensive policy is available to provide cover for your reasonable additional accommodation and travel expenses, medical transfer, evacuation or repatriation if you must be transported to the nearest hospital for emergency medical treatment or be brought back to Australia with appropriate medical supervision. The medical transfer, evacuation or repatriation must first be approved by Fast Cover.*
When your luggage goes missing or valuable personal items are damaged or stolen overseas, it can cause inconvenience and additional costs. Comprehensive travel insurance may include cover for your luggage and personal items such as laptops, cameras, and phones if they are lost, stolen or accidentally damaged in situations covered under your policy.*
Benefit limits and sub-limits apply to how much can be claimed for each item, and conditions set out when and how cover applies. For full details, it’s important to read the PDS to understand your entitlements and any exclusions that may apply.*
Sometimes travel-related incidents may involve other people as well as yourself. At Fast Cover, the Personal Liability benefit is available to provide cover for legal claims made against you for the payment of compensation in respect of:
Someone else’s death or injury, and/
The physical loss of, or damage to, someone else’s property.
This applies where the loss, injury, or damage is caused by an accident or a series of accidents attributable to one source or originating cause that occurs during your trip.
Your reasonable legal expenses, up to the limits set out in the benefit summary in our PDS, may also be covered for settling or defending the above legal claims made against you, where the claim is covered by the policy.*
It is important to understand that cover for personal liability does not apply in every situation and general exclusions apply. You must not admit fault or liability for the claim or incur any legal costs without our prior written approval. For example, personal liability does not cover unlawful activities or the use of certain vehicles. Always refer to the PDS for full details of what is and isn’t covered, as well as the limits and sub-limits that apply.*

Do I need comprehensive travel insurance?
Whether you’re planning a big overseas family holiday, a romantic couple's getaway to destinations with high medical costs, or a solo city escape, unexpected events can affect even the most carefully organised trip. Comprehensive travel insurance is designed to help cover Aussie travellers against a wide range of risks beyond just medical cover.
Thinking about whether you need Comprehensive cover for your next trip? Here are some common situations to consider when deciding if you need Comprehensive travel insurance and whether your policy can provide cover for these situations on your next trip:
If serious accident occurs while travelling overseas, the impact can go far beyond medical expenses. Fast Cover’s Comprehensive travel insurance includes benefits that may help provide financial support in the event of permanent disability, accidental death, and loss of income caused by an injury sustained during your trip.*
Consider if your comprehensive travel insurance includes cover for these benefits as it may help ease the financial strain on you or your loved ones if the worst happens.
Most overseas trips require paying deposits or upfront costs for flights, accommodation, or tours. If you become unexpectedly ill or injured and must cancel your plans, you could lose a significant amount of money.
Consider if your comprehensive travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses as this can help to prevent you or your loved ones from having to absorb the full financial loss yourself.
If you need to cancel your trip before departure due to an existing medical condition, you could face significant out-of-pocket expenses.
You may wish to check if you need to complete a medical screening and whether your comprehensive travel insurance policy can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to your existing medical conditions. This ensures you know exactly what you’re covered for before you travel.
Travelling for a wedding, concert, sporting event, or other once-in-a-lifetime experience means you may have tight schedules and important dates to keep.
If your transport is cancelled, delayed, or diverted, you could face additional costs for replacement flights or alternative arrangements to arrive on time. Check if your comprehensive travel insurance policy include cover for special event transport expenses.
Becoming sick or injured while travelling overseas can be both stressful and expensive. In destinations such as the United States or parts of Europe, hospital and medical costs can quickly reach tens of thousands of dollars.
Consider if your comprehensive travel insurance includes cover for overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses, emergency medical evacuation and repatriation if you need to return home under medical supervision. You might consider these benefits to be particularly important for destinations with high healthcare costs, providing essential support during unexpected medical emergencies.
Lost or stolen luggage and quickly disrupt your trip. Consider if your comprehensive policy includes cover for luggage and personal effects, including clothing, phones, and laptops.
Travel plans can change any time, from natural disasters or strikes. The Trip Disruption Expenses and Travel Delay Expenses benefits available under your Comprehensive travel insurance policy with Fast Cover may help with the reasonable cost of additional meals, accommodation, or alternative transport if your travel is disrupted by reasons covered under your policy.*

What is the best comprehensive travel insurance?
When travellers search for the best comprehensive travel insurance, the truth is there is no single policy that suits everyone. The “best” comprehensive travel insurance depends on your personal needs, where you’re travelling, what you’re doing, your age, your health, and your budget. What’s suitable for a solo backpacker exploring Vietnam might not meet the needs of a family travelling to the USA or a couple heading off on a cruise.
The right comprehensive travel insurance is considered the one that matches your trip, provides access to the level of cover you need, and offers benefits and limits that suit your circumstances. Here are some important factors to consider when comparing comprehensive travel insurance options and deciding which level of cover or policy is right for you.
Not all travel insurance policies are created the same. Comprehensive travel insurance generally provides the highest level of cover available, combining a wide range of benefits with higher benefit limits than lower-tier policies.
At Fast Cover, the Comprehensive policy includes benefits such as:
unlimited Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses
unlimited Trip Cancellation Expenses
cover for Special Events Transport Expenses
Accidental Death and Permanent Disability which are not available under the Basics or Standard Saver policies.
If you’re comparing options, start by looking at what the policy includes, from emergency medical expenses and cancellation benefits to luggage and disruption cover. Understanding the range and limit of benefits will help you decide whether a comprehensive travel policy is the most suitable option for your trip.
What if you get sick or injured overseas and require medical assistance? Medical costs overseas can be much higher than at home, and even a short hospital stay may become expensive. Comprehensive travel insurance is designed to include cover for overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses, as well as emergency medical evacuation and repatriation if you need to be transported to another location or returned to Australia under medical supervision.
When comparing comprehensive policies, looking at how medical cover applies to your trip can help you decide whether comprehensive travel insurance is the right level of cover for your destination and plans.
If an unexpected event forces you to cancel your trip, the costs can add up quickly, especially if you’ve already paid for flights, tours, or accommodation that aren’t refundable. Comprehensive travel insurance can include cancellation benefits, which may help reimburse you for eligible expenses if your trip is cancelled due to a covered event such as an unexpected illness, injury or other covered event.
When reviewing policies, check the maximum cancellation benefit limit and the types of events that qualify for reimbursement. Understanding these details can make it easier to compare policies and find one that aligns with your budget and travel commitments.
Existing medical conditions often hold travellers back from going on a trip. Consider if your comprehensive policy can provide cover for your existing medical condition.
Fast Cover’s Comprehensive travel insurance policy is available to provide cover for a range of existing medical conditions, helping you stay covered on your holiday. Simply complete a medical screening online or over the phone to determine if cover is available for your condition. Once approved, your existing medical condition will be included in your policy.*
The type of activities you plan on doing during your trip can have impact on the level of cover you need. Some travellers are simply sightseeing or relaxing, while others might be heading overseas for adventure like quad biking, hiking above 3000 meters, or riding a motorcycle.
With Fast Cover’s Comprehensive travel insurance policy, you can customise your policy with optional extras for an additional premium to provide cover for a wide range of activities and adventures.
When comparing comprehensive travel insurance, check whether the policy allows you to add optional cover for the types of activities and adventure you plan to do.
Some comprehensive travel insurance policies offer cover for extended or multi-destination travel, so you’re covered under a single policy for the duration of your journey.
With Fast Cover, you can include multiple destinations under a single trip policy for up to 24 months, allowing you to move between countries without buying separate policies. Reviewing how long your cover lasts and how it applies across destinations helps ensure your insurance matches the full length and scope of your trip.
When comparing options, check how long your cover lasts, whether it includes all your destinations, and whether you can extend it mid-trip if your plans change.
Natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions can disrupt travel plans with little notice, leaving travellers stranded or facing unexpected costs. If you're heading to a region where these risks are more common, it’s essential to check whether your policy includes trip disruption cover for such events.
Fast Cover’s Comprehensive travel insurance may help with reasonable additional costs, such as alternative accommodation and transport, when your trip is interrupted due to a covered event.
Understanding how a policy responds to these situations can help ensure you’re choosing the right comprehensive travel insurance. The best comprehensive travel insurance is the one that covers the situations that matter most to you, whether that’s managing high overseas medical bills, recovering cancellation costs, or navigating disruptions caused by unexpected events.

What is not covered in our comprehensive travel insurance?
When comparing international comprehensive travel insurance, it’s just as important to know what isn’t covered as it is to know what is. Like all insurance products, Fast Cover’s Comprehensive travel insurance has terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub-limits that apply that you need to be aware of and consider before buying travel insurance.
These are examples only. Read the PDS and TMD before buying. Claims are assessed individually in accordance with your policy, PDS and Certificate of Insurance.
If you’re injured while breaking the law overseas, your comprehensive travel insurance policy is unlikely to cover the incident. This includes scenarios such as riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet, driving without the proper licence, or operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Local laws vary significantly different between countries, what may be legal in Australia could be prohibited elsewhere. For example, in some destinations, even riding a scooter without the correct international licence could leave you without cover if an accident occurs. Engaging in illegal drug use or carrying prohibited substances could also result in both criminal charges overseas and the denial of any related insurance claim.
Since laws differ across countries, you should always check local regulations before you travel. Remember, comprehensive international travel insurance does not cover illegal activities.
Not every activity is automatically included in a comprehensive travel insurance policy. If you plan to go skiing in Japan, snowboarding in New Zealand, quad biking in Bali, or riding a motorcycle in Vietnam, you need to make sure you have the right optional extras included. For example, if you choose not to add the Motorcycle Pack, an accident while riding or being a passenger on a scooter could leave you responsible for all medical expenses.
It is important to think about what activities you will be participating in so that you have the right cover for the activities you plan to do overseas.
Luggage and personal effects cover is designed to help if your belongings are lost, stolen or damaged, but you must take reasonable care to protect and secure your luggage and personal items at all times. If you leave your phone, laptop, or wallet unattended on a café table while stepping away, or if you leave your bag on the beach while swimming, any theft or loss may not be covered. Similarly, if your accommodation provides a safe and you choose not to use it in its intended way and purpose, your claim may be affected if valuables are stolen from your room.
Make sure you always keep your belongings with you or keep them in a secure location or take reasonable measures to always secure them and at all places.
Comprehensive travel insurance covers emergencies, not regular health needs. This means routine doctor visits, dental check-ups, or repeat prescriptions are excluded from cover. For example, if you travel overseas and realise you’ve forgotten to bring enough of your usual medication, purchasing more overseas will likely not be reimbursed. Similarly, if you booked an elective surgery or cosmetic treatment while overseas, it would not be covered.
Should the Australian Government release a warning on official government Smartraveller website that certain areas overseas are no longer safe to travel to and you still choose to travel there anyway, there may be exclusions that will apply, such as if you do not follow advice in the mass media where a travel advisory risk rating of Do Not Travel was issued after policy purchase.
Note: We are unable to offer travel insurance to international destinations that have a Do Not Travel warning on official government Smartraveller website. To check which countries we may cover, enter your destination country in the quote box on our website.
Travel insurance is designed for unforeseen situations, not those that are already public knowledge. If you buy international comprehensive travel insurance after a major event has been declared, such as a volcanic eruption in Indonesia or a declared global disease outbreak, claims related to that event are unlikely to be covered.
You should check for any Travel Alerts that may have been issued for your overseas travel destination as well as information on the official government Smartraveller website so you know where you stand with regards to the cover that you will have on your international travel insurance policy.
Not every part of a holiday goes exactly as planned, and sometimes things just don’t live up to expectations. Maybe the weather in Bali was not as sunny as you hoped, the crowds in Europe made sightseeing a little harder, or your hotel in Thailand didn’t quite match the photos online. While these situations can be frustrating, they’re not considered insurable events, which means your Comprehensive travel insurance won’t cover them. Travel insurance is designed to step in when unexpected events cause financial loss, which is not recoverable in any other way, not when a trip is less enjoyable than you imagined.
As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case by case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and Certificate of Insurance.
