What types of cruises can be covered?
Fast Cover can provide cruise travel insurance for Australian domestic cruises and international cruises.
You must select Cruise cover for your policy to include cover for claims related to travel on a cruise ship or arising whilst on a cruise ship for 1 night or more in Australian waters. At Fast Cover, we distinguish domestic cruise ships depending on the number of passengers as follows:
Small Cruise Ships | Cover is available for domestic cruises on small cruise ships that take you along the Australian coastline and can explore seas and bays. You will need to choose ‘small ship’ if you are travelling on a ship with 200 passengers or less. |
|---|---|
Large Cruise Ships | Cover is available for Australian cruises in the sea or ocean on large ship cruises that take you out into the sea or ocean from 1 night or more to several weeks or even months. You will need to choose ‘large ship’ if you are travelling on a ship with over 200 passengers. |
If you are travelling on a day cruise in domestic waters, or on a river cruise, you do not need to add cruise cover to your travel insurance policy.

Please note that if you also answer ‘Yes’ to ‘Skiing or Snowboarding?’ for international destinations during your policy application, you will be given the option to select our Snow Sports Plus policy which will also include cruise cover if you answered ‘Yes’ to ‘Going on a Cruise?’.
You will not need to include cruise cover if you are taking an inland river cruise or a day cruise and will not be sleeping on the boat.

Does travel insurance cover medical expenses on domestic cruises?
Customers travelling on domestic cruise ships within Australian waters will not be offered the option to choose a Domestic Plus policy. They will need to choose from our international policy options provided during policy application. The reason for this is often customers who will be cruising within Australian waters will need cover for medical related expenses on board a cruise ship which is only provided under our international policies.
Covered: For cruises with a doctor on board the cruise ship, your cover is extended for some medical expenses incurred whilst on-board the cruise ship if you are injured or become sick.
Not Covered: There’s no medical cover for domestic cruises (such as out-of-pocket expenses including gap payments) where you can use your Medicare Card or private health insurance to cover your medical expenses or hospitalisation. We will not pay for any medical expenses or medical transportation which is provided on land in Australia.
While cruise ships have on-board medical facilities, they may not be equipped to deal with serious medical situations, and in an emergency, you may need to be evacuated off the ship and back onto land, so that you can be transported to a hospital for treatment.
Covered: If you are travelling on a cruise ship within Australian waters (including a remote area within Australia, but not a remote area on land within Australia), your cover is extended to allow for you to be evacuated to a location where Australian emergency services can pick you up and transfer you to an Australian medical facility for treatment if you are injured or become sick.
If you require medical evacuation, you MUST contact our Emergency Assistance Team or the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) to arrange the evacuation:
Fast Cover Emergency Assistance Team | Australian Maritime Safety Authority |
In Australia: 02 8320 7999 | In Australia: 1800 641 792 |
From Overseas: +61 2 8320 7999 | From Overseas: +61 2 6230 6811 |
A helicopter or seaplane company should NOT be contacted directly prior to speaking to Fast Cover Emergency Assistance or AMSA. Failure to do so may result in your claim being unpaid.^

A helicopter or seaplane company should NOT be contacted directly prior to speaking to Fast Cover Emergency Assistance or AMSA. Failure to do so may result in your claim being unpaid.^
Will Medicare cover me on a cruise in Australian waters?
Many Australian travellers mistakenly believe that they’re automatically covered by Medicare if they’re cruising in Australian waters.
However, Medicare benefits may not apply on your cruise even if in domestic Australian waters unless there’s a Medicare-accessible doctor on-board the cruise ship, which may be unlikely, as the large cruise lines aren’t usually owned by an Australian company. The Australian Government won't pay for your medical expenses overseas or medical evacuation costs.
So, if a sickness or injury occurs on the cruise ship and requires medical attention, many people are surprised to find they could be charged at private rates. That’s why when taking a cruise which has a doctor on-board, you’ll find that many travellers arrange cruise travel insurance so that cover is available for their on-board medical expenses, the cost of emergency medical evacuation from the cruise ship by helicopter to the mainland and when overseas, their medical expenses.
Taking out an international travel insurance policy with cruise cover for a cruise in Australian waters gives you the advantage of overseas emergency medical benefits including:
Overseas 24/7 emergency medical assistance
Overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses
Overseas emergency medical evacuation and repatriation
You'll also be able to access Australian medical facilities. If you become seriously sick or injured during your cruise and medical treatment is not available on-board the cruise ship, cover is extended to allow for you to be evacuated to a location where Australian emergency services (including an ambulance or Royal Flying Doctor Service) can pick you up and transfer you to an for treatment if you are injured or become sick.*
In circumstances where you become unexpectedly injured or sick and require medical evacuation or repatriation to Australia, you may be able to use your Medicare card and your private health insurance to cover the medical expenses from the time you’re transferred to the ambulance or Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Do I need travel insurance for a cruise?
Whether you plan to go on a cruise in Australia or overseas, we understand that unexpected situations and factors outside of your control could change your travel plans and leave you with out-of-pocket expenses. Cruise travel insurance can help better prepare you to deal with unexpected and unforeseen situations that could impact your cruise holiday should the unexpected happen.
Here are some situations to consider when deciding if you need travel insurance for cruising and whether your travel insurance policy can provide cover for these situations on your next cruise trip:
Becoming unexpectedly sick or injured could force you to cancel your cruise trip. Rescheduling a cancelled cruise holiday and dealing with lost deposits and non-refundable cruise tickets, flights and accommodation can become stressful and expensive. Consider if your cruise travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses.
If you need to cancel your cruise holiday due to an existing medical condition, you could be left out-of-pocket for non-refundable pre-paid trip bookings. You may wish to check if your cruise travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to your existing medical condition.
Bad weather and other covered events could cause delays and mean you might have to spend extra money on food and accommodation while you wait for new transport to get to your destination or cruise. Consider if your cruise travel insurance can provide cover for travel delay expenses such as additional meals and accommodation.
If your scheduled transport to your cruise or on-shore tour package is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted, you could risk spending thousands of dollars on additional transport to make it to your special events on time. Worse yet, you could miss out on special events you’ve already booked and paid for. Consider if your international travel insurance can provide cover for special event transport expenses.

What is not covered in our cruise travel insurance?
It’s important to know not just what your travel insurance covers, but also what it doesn’t, so you can choose the right policy for your needs. As with all policies, many situations and activities will have terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that you need to be aware of and consider before buying travel insurance.
These are examples only. Read the PDS and TMD before buying. Claims are assessed individually in accordance with your policy, PDS and Certificate of Insurance.
Sometimes it happens - severe weather may prevent your cruise ship from being able to dock at a port. While there is no cover on your cruise travel insurance policy for missing a port, you can put a claim in for any shore excursions that you've already paid for at that destination.
Unfortunately, if you're confined to your cabin because there's a viral outbreak on-board your cruise ship, the policy does not provide cover for you not being able to enjoy everything that the cruise ship has to offer. If you do unexpectedly contract a virus, however, and need to see the doctor, you can put in a claim for the medical expenses you incur, and also for any shore excursions that you’ve already paid for, and are now not able to participate in.
If your belongings are stolen while unattended or unsupervised, you may not be able to claim for the stolen item. For example: If you leave your bag with your wallet and passport inside it on the deck chairs while you take a swim on the cruise pool, this may be considered leaving your belongings unattended, in which case you may not be covered.
You must take care to reasonably protect and secure your luggage and personal effects at all times. Make sure that you have your belongings with you, or keep them locked up in your cabin.
Perhaps the weather was disappointing or the events and onshore excursions on the cruise itinerary didn’t live up to your expectations. Whatever the reason you’re unhappy with how your cruise holiday has shaped up, your travel insurance policy is not intended to compensate you because you didn’t enjoy your time.
If you become injured while breaking the law, there are various conditions and exclusions that may apply which means you may not be covered. For example, this may include riding a motorcycle without the required helmet, or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Remember that possession of certain drugs is illegal and different countries have different laws. Using drugs or selling them can land you in trouble with the law overseas.
If you’re injured in an accident while, for example, riding a motorcycle, moped or scooter while on an on-shore cruise excursion, and you didn’t add the Motorcycle Pack to your international travel insurance policy, you may be responsible for paying your medical and hospital expenses because you did not choose to include cover for that under your policy.
It is important to think about what activities you will be participating in so that you have the right cover for the activities you plan to do overseas and within Australia.
Should the Australian Government release a warning on official government Smartraveller website that certain areas overseas are no longer safe to travel to and you still choose to travel there anyway, there may be exclusions that will apply such as if you do not follow advice in the mass media where a travel advisory of Do Not Travel (or equivalent if this term is replaced) was issued after policy purchase.
Note: We are unable to offer travel insurance to international destinations that have a Do Not Travel (or equivalent if this term is replaced) warning on official government Smartraveller website. To check which countries we may cover, enter your destination country in the quote box on our website.
Known events can be considered as serious situations from natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions to disease outbreaks which can affect your holiday plans and also the cover on your overseas travel insurance policy.
If you buy your international travel insurance after an event is known, the cover on your policy may be affected. You should check for any Travel Alerts that may have been issued for your overseas travel destination as well as information on the official government Smartraveller website so you know where you stand with regards to the cover that you will have on your international travel insurance policy.
As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case by case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and Certificate of Insurance.
