Does domestic travel insurance cover medical expenses in Australia?
Under Australian legislation¹, travel insurance providers cannot provide cover for any medical expenses within Australia for Australian residents and citizens who are eligible for Australian Medicare. The intention is for any medical costs within Australia to remain under Medicare or Private Health.
Therefore, when you are travelling in Australia under a Domestic Plus travel insurance policy, Fast Cover is unable to provide cover for medical emergencies and medical expenses incurred within Australia because medical expenses are covered by Medicare and/or your private health insurance.
Whilst our domestic travel insurance policy does not provide cover for medical expenses, it can provide cover for Trip Cancellation Expenses due to a medical situation or condition that is covered under your policy.*
Read our examples to see how our Domestic Plus travel insurance policy may be able to provide cover in circumstances covered under your policy. Please note our examples are purely fictional and are for illustrative purposes only. Any claims will be assessed in accordance with the relevant PDS, your Certificate of Insurance, and your particular circumstances.
A mother bought a Domestic Plus policy to cover a family holiday to the Gold Coast during the September school holidays with activities including theme parks, going to the beach and hiking. She completed a medical screening and applied to include cover for her existing medical condition. Fast Cover was able to include cover for her existing medical condition and it was listed as ‘Covered’ on her Certificate of Insurance.
Example: Two days before the family was due to depart on a flight from Sydney to the Gold Coast, one of the children breaks his leg whilst riding a skateboard, requiring surgery, and resulting in the need to cancel the holiday.
In this instance, the costs of the surgery would likely be covered by Medicare and possibly their private health insurance policy, but not their domestic travel insurance policy.
However, under the Trip Cancellation Expenses benefit of the Domestic Plus policy, the mother can submit a claim for the cost of the flights, hotel or theme park tickets that cannot be refunded or credited for the claims team to assess, as the trip was cancelled due to an unexpected injury.

Do I need domestic travel insurance for travel in Australia?
Whether you plan to travel to Sydney Harbour, get a taste of Tasmania or explore the Great Barrier Reef, we understand that unexpected situations and factors outside of your control could change your domestic travel plans and leave you with out of pocket expenses. Travel insurance for domestic travel in Australia can help better prepare you to deal with unforeseen situations that could impact your travel plans should the unexpected happen.
Here are some situations to consider when deciding if you need travel insurance for your trip in Australia and whether your domestic travel insurance policy can provide cover for these situations:
Becoming unexpectedly sick or injured could force you to cancel your trip. Rescheduling a cancelled trip and dealing with lost deposits and non-refundable flights and accommodation can become stressful and expensive, even when you’re travelling within Australia. Consider if your domestic travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses.
While medical expenses you incur in Australia are covered by Medicare or your private health insurance, you could still be out of pocket for non-refundable pre-paid trip bookings if an existing medical condition forces you to cancel your domestic trip. You may wish to check if your domestic travel insurance policy can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to your existing medical condition.
Bad weather and other covered events could cause delays and mean you have to spend extra money on food and accommodation while you wait for a new flight. Consider if your domestic travel insurance can provide cover for travel delay expenses such as additional meals and accommodation.
If your scheduled transport to special events is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted, you could risk spending thousands of dollars on additional transport to make it to your special events on time. Worse yet, you could miss out on special events you’ve already booked and paid for. Consider if your domestic travel insurance can provide cover for special event transport expenses.
