A mother bought a Domestic Plus policy to cover a family holiday to the Gold Coast during the September school holidays with activities including theme parks, going to the beach and hiking. She completed a medical screening and applied to include cover for her existing medical condition. Fast Cover was able to include cover for her existing medical condition and it was listed as ‘Covered’ on her Certificate of Insurance.

Example: Two days before the family was due to depart on a flight from Sydney to the Gold Coast, one of the children breaks his leg whilst riding a skateboard, requiring surgery, and resulting in the need to cancel the holiday.

In this instance, the costs of the surgery would likely be covered by Medicare and possibly their private health insurance policy, but not their domestic travel insurance policy.

However, under the Trip Cancellation Expenses benefit of the Domestic Plus policy, the mother can submit a claim for the cost of the flights, hotel or theme park tickets that cannot be refunded or credited for the claims team to assess, as the trip was cancelled due to an unexpected injury.

Please note this example is purely fictional and is for illustrative purposes only. Any claims will be assessed in accordance with the relevant PDS, your Certificate of Insurance, and your particular circumstances.

Cover for existing medical conditions

If you have any existing medical conditions, you may be able to apply to include cover for them. Our simple medical screening process can be completed online or over the phone to help you find out if your condition can be covered.

Select who needs cover

Once you've added all travellers, to your policy, you can select those who wish to add cover for any existing medical conditions.

Take a medical screening

Answer a few questions online or over the phone about your health history. This helps us determine if your condition can be covered.

Choose to add cover

We'll let you know if we can provide cover for any existing medical conditions. You can then choose to add it to your policy.

Fast Cover's domestic travel insurance automatically provides cover for river cruises and short day trip cruises within Australia.

Learn more about the difference between river cruises and ocean cruises.

If you’re embarking on an ocean cruise in Australian waters for one or more nights, cruise cover is available to help with unexpected onboard medical emergencies and evacuation to shore through our international policies.*

Customers travelling on domestic cruise ships within Australian waters, will not be offered the option to choose a Domestic Plus Policy. They will need to choose from our international policy options provided during policy application. The reason for this is often customers who will be cruising within Australian waters will need certain cover for medical related expenses on board a cruise ship which is only provided under our international policies.

In Australia, your medical expenses are usually covered by Medicare or private health insurance. Medicare benefits may not apply on your domestic cruise unless there’s a Medicare registered doctor on-board the cruise ship. If there’s no Medicare registered doctor on-board or if your health insurance doesn’t provide cover for cruises, you could be left paying out of pocket if you become sick or injured on your domestic cruise and require medical attention.

Becoming unexpectedly sick or injured could force you to cancel your trip. Rescheduling a cancelled trip and dealing with lost deposits and non-refundable flights and accommodation can become stressful and expensive, even when you’re travelling within Australia. Consider if your domestic travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses.

While medical expenses you incur in Australia are covered by Medicare or your private health insurance, you could still be out of pocket for non-refundable pre-paid trip bookings if an existing medical condition forces you to cancel your domestic trip. You may wish to check if your domestic travel insurance policy can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to your existing medical condition.

Bad weather and other covered events could cause delays and mean you have to spend extra money on food and accommodation while you wait for a new flight. Consider if your domestic travel insurance can provide cover for travel delay expenses such as additional meals and accommodation.

If your scheduled transport to special events is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted, you could risk spending thousands of dollars on additional transport to make it to your special events on time. Worse yet, you could miss out on special events you’ve already booked and paid for. Consider if your domestic travel insurance can provide cover for special event transport expenses.

This is a summary only and does not cover all situations. Any advice is general only and does not consider your personal circumstances. Read the PDS and TMD to determine whether travel insurance is right for you before buying.

If you become injured while breaking the law on your trip within Australia, there are various conditions and exclusions that may apply which means you may not be covered. For example, this could include driving a rental vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Remember that possession of certain drugs is illegal in Australia and laws may vary between states. Using drugs or selling them can land you in trouble with the law in Australia.

If your personal items and belongings are stolen while unattended or unsupervised, you may not be able to make a claim for the stolen items. For example, if you leave your bag with your wallet and valuables inside it on the beach while you go for a swim, this will likely be considered leaving your belongings unattended, in which case you may not be covered.

Make sure you keep your belongings with you at all times or keep them in a secure location.

Medical expenses incurred in Australia are covered by Medicare or your private health insurance so our domestic travel insurance policy will not cover you for medical expenses incurred within Australia.

Known events are serious situations, from natural disasters like bushfires and tsunamis to disease outbreaks, which can affect your holiday plans and also the cover on your domestic travel insurance policy.

If you buy your domestic travel insurance after an event is deemed a known event, the cover on your policy may be affected. You should check for any Travel Alerts that may have been issued for Australia so you know where you stand with regards to the cover that you will have on your domestic travel insurance policy.
