Do I need travel insurance for a motorcycle trip?
Whether you’re planning to ride a scooter in Thailand, go sightseeing on a moped in Europe or embark on a cross-country motorcycle tour of the US, we understand that unexpected situations and factors outside of your control can arise while travelling on two wheels, leaving you with out of pocket expenses. Travel insurance with cover motorcycle riding can help you deal with unforeseen events if the unexpected happens.
Here are some situations which you might consider when deciding if you need travel insurance with cover for riding a motorcycle for your next trip and whether your travel insurance policy can provide cover for these situations:
Becoming unexpectedly sick or injured could force you to cancel your motorcycle trip. Rescheduling a cancelled holiday and dealing with lost deposits and non-refundable motorcycling tours, flights and accommodation can become stressful and expensive. Consider if your travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses.
If you need to cancel your motorcycling holiday due to an existing medical condition, you could be left out of pocket for non-refundable pre-paid trip bookings. You may wish to check if your travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses if you need to cancel your motorcycle trip due to your existing medical condition.
If you have any existing medical conditions, you may be able to apply to include cover for them during your trip. Fast Cover’s simple medical screening process can be completed online or over the phone to help you find out if your existing medical or pregnancy condition can be covered.
Consider whether your travel insurance can provide cover if you become sick or injured while being a rider or passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter overseas and incur emergency medical and hospital expenses.
This could include treatment for fractures, dislocations, cuts, infections or other unexpected injuries sustained while travelling on a motorcycle, moped or scooter overseas. You may also wish to check whether your policy can provide cover for overseas emergency medical evacuation or repatriation if you require urgent medical transport, particularly if you’ll be visiting remote destinations or challenging motorcycle routes.
If you experience a medical emergency while travelling on a motorcycle, moped or scooter overseas, consider whether your travel insurance policy includes access to 24/7 emergency medical assistance services.
Depending on your situation and location, emergency assistance teams may be able to help arrange medical treatment, hospital admissions, emergency transport or communication support during an overseas medical emergency.
While rare, serious accidents resulting in death can happen while travelling on a motorcycle, moped or scooter overseas. Consider whether your travel insurance policy includes benefits for accidental death if you suffer a serious injury resulting in death as a result of riding or being a passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter during your overseas trip.
If your scheduled transport to your motorcycling tour is cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted you could risk spending thousands of dollars on additional transport to make it to your tour on time. Worse yet, you could miss out on special events you’ve already booked and paid for. Consider if your travel insurance can provide cover for special event transport expenses.

What’s not covered in our travel insurance for riding or being a passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter?
It’s important to know not just what your travel insurance covers, but also what it doesn’t, so you can choose the right policy for your needs. As with all policies, many situations and activities will have terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that you need to be aware of and consider before buying travel insurance.
These are examples only. Read the PDS and TMD before buying. Claims are assessed individually in accordance with your policy, PDS and Certificate of Insurance.
If you’re injured in an accident while, for example, riding a scooter in Bali, and you didn’t add the Motorcycle Pack to your eligible travel insurance policy, you may be responsible for paying your overseas medical and hospital expenses because you did not choose to include cover for that under your policy.
It is important to think about what activities you will be participating in so that you have the right cover for the activities you plan to do on your trip.
The Motorcycle Pack is available at an additional premium as an optional cover for Aussie travellers aged 74 and under (at the date of policy issue) when they purchase a Comprehensive, Standard Saver, Basics, Snow Sports Plus, or Frequent Traveller Saver policy. Travellers aged 75 and over at the date of policy issue are not eligible for the Motorcycle Pack.
Failing to meet the licencing requirements relevant to you riding or being a passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter will affect the cover on your policy. You must comply with the restrictions of your Australian license, as well as the local laws.
There is no cover if you are the rider in control of a motorcycle, moped or scooter with an engine capacity:
of 125cc or less and do not hold both a current Australian Drivers Licence (Provisional or higher) (regardless of the local laws) and a licence valid for the country that you are riding in
greater than 125cc and do not hold both a current Australian Motorcycle Licence (Provisional or higher) valid for the same class of motorcycle, moped or scooter (regardless of the local laws) and a licence valid for the country that you are riding in.
There is no cover if you are the passenger on a motorcycle, moped or scooter and the person in control does not hold a current licence (Provisional or higher) valid for the same class of motorcycle, moped or scooter being ridden, or their licence is not valid for the country that you are in.
Our policy does not provide cover for damage to, or theft of, the motorcycle, moped or scooter itself. This applies whether the vehicle is owned or hired. If you are hiring a motorcycle, moped or scooter, check with the rental company about their own insurance or damage waiver options.
The Motorcycle Pack does not provide cover if the claim or loss is for:
Permanent disability under Benefit 10
Loss of income under Benefit 11
Personal liability under Benefit 18
Rental vehicle excess under Benefit 19
If you become injured while breaking the law, there are various conditions and exclusions that may apply which means you may not be covered. For example, if you ride a motorcycle, moped or scooter without wearing the required safety gear such as a crash helmet or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The Motorcycle Pack does not provide cover for riding off road. Cover is only available when riding on either sealed or unsealed public roads. There is also no cover for motocross, jumping, racing or competition of any sort.
There is no cover under the Benefit 14: Luggage & Personal Effects for items left with a motorcycle, moped or scooter, even in a locked storage compartment. Please note there is also no cover for hired items such as a hired helmet or safety gear.
Should the Australian Government release a warning on official government Smartraveller website that certain areas overseas are no longer safe to travel to and you still choose to travel there anyway, there may be exclusions that will apply such as if you do not follow advice in the mass media where a travel advisory risk rating of Do Not Travel was issued after policy purchase.
Note: We are unable to offer travel insurance to international destinations that have a Do Not Travel warning on official government Smartraveller website. To check which countries we may cover, enter your destination country in the quote box on our website.
Perhaps the traffic was bad, you didn’t enjoy your motorcycle tour, or the route didn’t live up to the expectation. Whatever the reason you’re unhappy with how your motorcycle trip has shaped up, your travel insurance policy is not intended to compensate you because you didn’t enjoy your time there.
As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case by case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and Certificate of Insurance.
