Avoid drinking tap water; instead, stick to bottled water while exploring cities such as Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City.

Pollution

Air quality in major cities can be poor. If you suffer from respiratory issues make sure to bring your health devices like an inhaler or wear a mask.

Food poisoning

Sampling street food is a delight in Vietnam, but stick to reputable vendors for safety and check the ingredients to reduce the risk of common food allergens including seafood.

Food allergies

Crustaceans, fish and molluscs are common food allergens used in Vietnamese cuisine. Use translation apps, check labels carefully and ensure you have your medication on hand in case of food allergies.

Insect-borne illness

Dengue Fever and Zika Virus are mosquito-borne viral infections posing risks to travellers, particularly during the wet season: April - October in Northern Vietnam, and June - December in Southern Vietnam. The Red River and Mekong deltas are known as high risk areas. Ensure to wear long sleeve clothing and mosquito repellent.

Obtain a permit for restricted medications

You may need to apply for customs clearance for some medicines before entering Vietnam.

Carry documentation

Bring your prescription, a letter explaining the purpose of the medication from your doctor and keep medications in their original packaging. Ensure labels clearly show your name, prescribing physician, and pharmacy information.

Travel limits

Bring the amount of medication you will need for your stay in Vietnam, ensuring the amount of medication matches what’s stated on your prescription and documentation. If you need to use medicine for a longer period of time, you can declare this at customs at the port of entry where you arrive.
