Does international travel insurance cover my hospital expenses if I get injured during snow sports overseas?
Fast Cover’s Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit may provide cover for the emergency medical and hospital expenses you incur overseas from participating in snow sports listed in our PDS if you choose to add cover for snow sports and take out the Snow Sports Plus policy. Here’s some important information you need to know about overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses relating to snow sports.
This benefit provides reimbursement for unexpected medical emergencies that can happen on your overseas trip, from treatment for a broken bone to emergency surgery, depending on your circumstances. This benefit may provide some cover for overseas medical and hospital expenses for injuries sustained from your participation in covered snow sports if you have purchased additional cover for them and have taken out the Snow Sports Plus policy.
You should be aware that cover isn’t available for all medical expenses as it depends on the terms and conditions and exclusions of your policy, including conditions for snow sports. That’s why it’s important to review your policy and PDS to understand what is and isn't covered while you're overseas and the terms and conditions that apply.
Some countries have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with Australia which may provide cover for some medical costs during your stay if you meet the eligibility requirements. Please check with the relevant information sources for more information. In these cases, Fast Cover’s travel insurance policy may not pay for the cost of medical care that is covered by the RHCA. However, Reciprocal Health Care Agreements may not cover every type of medical expense.
If you’re travelling to an overseas destination that doesn’t have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia, you may likely be responsible for all your medical expenses if you unexpectedly fall sick or are injured while travelling there. So considering taking out travel insurance for your overseas destination with cover for unexpected overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses may potentially save you thousands of dollars when cover is not available under a RHCA.
Please remember to do your own research regarding this to make an informed decision based on your personal and financial circumstances.
You can apply for cover for your existing medical conditions and any changes in health and/or new medical conditions you may develop before you leave for your snow trip through a medical screening.
Find out more about what we consider to be a medical condition and how you can apply for cover in our page on travel insurance for existing medical conditions.

Do I need travel insurance for skiing or snowboarding?
Whether you plan to ski, snowboard or participate in other snow sports in Australia or overseas, we understand that unexpected situations and factors outside of your control could change your travel plans and leave you with out-of-pocket expenses. Snow sports travel insurance can help better prepare you to deal with unforeseen situations that could impact your travel plans to the snow should the unexpected happen.
Here are some situations to consider when deciding if you need travel insurance for skiing or snowboarding and whether your travel insurance policy can provide cover for these situations on your next trip to the snow:
Even if you're an experienced skier, a fellow thrill-seeker may make an unexpected move, you might mogul the wrong way or come off second best with an obstacle on the ski slopes. Consider if your snow sports travel insurance can provide cover for unexpected injuries or medical situations including emergency medical and hospital expenses, and emergency medical evacuation and repatriation if you become unexpectedly injured while participating in covered snow sports overseas.
It is important to note that travel insurers in Australia may not be able to provide cover for medical expenses incurred in Australia as these expenses are generally covered by Medicare and/or your Private Health Insurance.
If you become injured or sick during your trip you may have to sit out on snow sports activities you’ve already pre-booked and pre-paid, leaving you with out-of-pocket snow sports expenses. Consider if your snow sports travel insurance can provide some cover for pre-booked and pre-paid snow sports expenses such as your lift passes, snow sports equipment hire or lessons.
Perfect snow conditions aren’t guaranteed on your trip to the snow. Poor snow conditions, bad weather or a power failure could unexpectedly shut down lifts or lead to snow resort closure. Consider if your snow sports travel insurance can provide some cover to help reimburse you for the cost of transport to the nearest open resort or for the cost of lift passes at an alternative snow resort.
Becoming unexpectedly sick or injured could force you to cancel your trip to the snow. Rescheduling a cancelled ski holiday and dealing with lost deposits and non-refundable flights and snow resort accommodation can become stressful and expensive. Consider if your snow sports travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses.
If you need to cancel your snow holiday due to an existing medical condition, you could be left out-of-pocket for non-refundable pre-paid trip bookings. You may wish to check if your snow sports travel insurance can provide cover for trip cancellation expenses if you need to cancel your trip due to your existing medical condition.
Bad weather and other covered events could cause delays and mean you might have to spend extra money on food and accommodation while you wait for a new flight to get to your destination or snow resort. Consider if your snow sports travel insurance can provide cover for travel delay expenses such as additional meals and accommodation.

What is not covered in our snow sports travel insurance?
It’s important to know not just what your snow sports travel insurance covers, but also what it doesn’t, so you can choose the right policy for your needs. As with all policies, many situations and activities will have terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and sub limits that you need to be aware of and consider before buying travel insurance.
These are examples only. Read the PDS and TMD before buying. Claims are assessed individually in accordance with your policy, PDS and Certificate of Insurance.
If you become injured while breaking the law, there are various conditions and exclusions that may apply which means you may not be covered. For example, this may include riding a motorcycle without the required helmet, or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Remember that possession of certain drugs is illegal and different countries have different laws. Using drugs or selling them can land you in trouble with the law overseas.
If you’re injured in an accident while, for example, participating in recreational skiing or snowboarding, and you didn’t add snow sports cover to your international travel insurance policy, you may be responsible for paying your medical and hospital expenses because you did not choose to include cover for that under your policy.
Similarly, if you participate in a snow sports activity that requires a professional snow sports instructor, without a professional snow sports instructor, you may not be covered under your policy.
It is important to think about what activities you will be participating in so that you have the right cover for the activities you plan to do overseas and within Australia.
If your belongings are stolen while unattended or unsupervised, you may not be able to claim for the stolen item. For example: If you leave your bag with your wallet and passport inside it at the ski resort cafe while you go skiing, this may be considered leaving your belongings unattended, in which case you may not be covered.
Make sure you keep your belongings with you at all times or keep them in a secure location or take reasonable measures to secure them at all times and at all places.
There are exclusions that may apply for regular or routine check-ups or filling regular prescriptions as they are not considered medical emergencies. Your claim might be denied if it arises from or involves the cost of medication in use at the time the trip began or the cost for maintaining a course of treatment you were on prior to the trip.
Should the Australian Government release a warning on official government Smartraveller website that certain areas overseas are no longer safe to travel to and you still choose to travel there anyway, there may be exclusions that will apply such as if you do not follow advice in the mass media where a travel advisory of Do Not Travel (or equivalent if this term is replaced) was issued after policy purchase.
Note: We are unable to offer travel insurance to international destinations that have a Do Not Travel (or equivalent if this term is replaced) warning on official government Smartraveller website. To check which countries we may cover, enter your destination country in the quote box on our website.
Known events can be considered as serious situations, from natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, to disease outbreaks, which can affect your holiday plans and also the cover on your overseas travel insurance policy.
If you buy your international travel insurance after an event is known, the cover on your policy may be affected. You should check for any Travel Alerts that may have been issued for your overseas travel destination as well as information on the official government Smartraveller website so you know where you stand with regards to the cover that you will have on your international travel insurance policy.
Perhaps the snow was too cold for your liking, you didn’t enjoy your ski lessons, or the ski resort accommodation didn’t live up to the pictures online. Whatever the reason you’re unhappy with how your trip to the snow has shaped up, your snow and ski travel insurance is not intended to compensate you because you didn’t enjoy your time at the snow.
As each individual’s circumstances are different, we will assess each claim on a case by case basis and in accordance with your specific circumstances, policy terms and Certificate of Insurance.
